Create a New Category

Categories group devices by type (Laptop, Monitor, iPhone, Switch, …) and — when combined with Attributes — give you a structured way to capture the fields that matter for each type.

Before you start

info

Each subscription tier has a category limit:

  • Free — up to 4 categories
  • Professional — up to 25 categories
  • Enterprise — unlimited

When you hit the limit, the + Add category button becomes disabled and a Limit reached banner appears above the list.

Create a category

  1. Click Categories in the sidebar.
  2. Click + Add category in the top-right corner.
  3. Fill in the Category editor that opens on the right side of the page.

Category Name

Enter a descriptive name (2–25 characters). Names must be unique within the tenant. Examples: Laptop, iPhone, Dock, Monitor 27".

Attributes (optional)

Attributes are extra fields that appear on every device in this category. They let you capture category-specific data — for example, CPU, RAM, Storage on a Laptop, or IMEI on a phone.

Click + Add Attribute to add a row. Each attribute has:

FieldPurposeExample
NameAttribute label, 2–25 characters.Memory, CPU, IMEI
TypeData type. Choose from Text, Number, or Date.Text for CPU, Number for Memory
PrefixOptional character(s) shown before the value. Max 5 chars.$
SuffixOptional character(s) shown after the value. Max 5 chars.GB,
RequiredToggle to make the field mandatory when creating a device in this category.

Use the red ✕ in the top-right of an attribute row to remove it. You can add up to 6 attributes per category — the counter next to the Attributes heading (e.g. 1/6) shows current usage.

Show property values in device name

When this toggle is on, the attribute values are appended to the device's display name. For example, a laptop named MacBook Pro with RAM = 16 and CPU = M3 would show as MacBook Pro (16, M3) in lists and tiles.

Keep it off for a cleaner name, or on when you want the attributes visible without opening the device detail panel.

Amortization period

Select how this category's devices depreciate over time:

  • No amortization — price is not amortized (default).
  • 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, or 10 years — linear depreciation over the chosen period starting from the purchase date.

The amortized value is shown on each device's detail panel and aggregated into the Dashboard's Monthly Spend Trend chart.

Save

Click Save at the bottom of the editor. The new category appears in the list on the left, ordered alphabetically, and is immediately available for selection on the Add Device page.
